Lauren Boebert election results – live: Republican says ‘of course’ she will win as Colorado election could be recounted

Frisch challenges Boebert in a close race in Colorado

Lauren Boebert said she was confident she would keep her House seat as she widened her lead against Democratic challenger Adam Frisch – but the unexpected upset race continues to be too close to call.

When asked by reporters if she expected to win the race on Thursday, the incumbent Republican replied, “Of course I expect to win. It’s going to be awesome.”

Ms Boebert now leads with 1,122 votes in what turned out to be a surprisingly close race for the US House seat in Coloradoof the 3rd congressional district.

After trailing for much of the race, Donald Trump’s ally regained the lead on Thursday, now leading with 50.2% of the vote to Mr Frisch’s 49.8%, with 99% of votes reported.

The race could head for an automatic recount if the winning side does not win by a margin of more than 0.5%.

The tight race came as a surprise to Republicans and Democrats – as well as pollsters – after the controversial, gun-toting congresswoman should have enjoyed a comfortable re-election.

Lauren Boebert paid a visit to Washington DC as the fight to retain her House seat unfolded in Colorado.

Republican incumbent MAGA attended the House Freedom Caucus’ Covid-19 pandemic accountability hearing on Thursday – the same day she finally broke her silence on the unexpectedly tight race.

Speaking to reporters at the event, she tried to push the GOP’s worse-than-expected performance in her home state on the most important candidates.

“I don’t know if there wasn’t enough enthusiasm for our top gubernatorial and Senate candidates, or what happened there, but there have been a lot of changes in the votes there,” she said.

Colorado Democratic Gov. Jared Polis and Sen. Michael Bennet have both comfortably beaten their Republican rivals in their re-election races.

Is Colorado heading for a recount?

In Colorado, an automatic recount is triggered if a candidate wins by a margin of 0.5% or less of the leading candidate’s total votes.

This means that, to avoid a recount, Lauren Boebert or Adam Frisch would have to lead with around 788 votes.

If a recount is triggered, it must be completed within 35 days of Election Day.
