Lauren Conrad gets real about how she was portrayed on Laguna Beach.

As fans of the show know, back when Conrad was in high school with Stephane Colletti and Kristin Cavallarithe future Hills star – who was a longtime friend, and sometimes more, of Colletti – found herself entangled in the volatile and on-and-off relationship between the future Very Cavallari and A tree hill stars. Viewers were tricked throughout the show’s first season into choosing sides in the alleged love triangle, and the on-air rivalry followed them for years.

On Tuesday’s episode of the Dear Media Podcast Back to the beach with Kristin and StephenConrad sat down with her former partners to think about how the show portrayed their dynamic.

“I think they took a little piece of me and used it,” Conrad, 36, told Cavallari, 35.

“Like, I’m often kinda in the corner just, like, staring at you guys scary,” she joked. “Which is rather embarrassing.”

“And the funny thing is, I’ve had several boyfriends during that time. I’m like, ‘I feel so bad for them if they watch this. [to see me] just, like, going after this guy.”

Cavallari agreed: “Yeah, they really hammered home the love triangle.”

“They didn’t want me to have anything else,” Conrad said.

Both Conrad and Cavallari said they were tapped to narrate their respective seasons of the show without having much opportunity to give producers feedback. “Like, they write you a script,” Conrad said. “And you’re like ‘Okay, I guess that’s what I read.'”

When Cavallari asked if Conrad was “ever pushing back,” the Little Market founder admitted, “I don’t think I understood I was allowed to.”

She added: “I think there were probably a few things I would say, ‘I don’t think that’s right’ or ‘I feel uncomfortable’. But I think, because you’re so young, and you were like, ‘Well, that’s what I signed up for. That’s your job.'”

Cavallari said it was a relief to hear Conrad’s perspective. “I felt like I was on a small island and I was the only one being manipulated and edited,” she said. “Talk to Stephen, then bring everyone in [the podcast]I realized that everyone was in the same boat.”
