James Corden says his wife’s food allergy was the reason for his ‘rude comment’ at New York restaurant

The reason for James CordonBalthazar’s outburst in New York comes down to his wife’s health, he said.

The Late show addressed host allegations against him by the restorer Keith McNally on Monday night’s episode of his show. After Corden apologizes, telling viewers that his “intention” was never to upset those in the restaurant, he replied to the “sarcastic” comment he did when he sent an egg yolk omelette – which his wife, Julia Carey, ordered – back to the kitchen.

In his monologue, he alleged that his wife had been given food “to which she was allergic” and recounted the series of events.

“So we sat down, we ordered, and my wife explained to me that she had a serious food allergy,” he says. “So when everyone’s meals arrived, my wife got the food she was allergic to. But she hadn’t taken a bite of it or anything, no worries – we sent her away . Everything was fine.”

When it went wrong more than once, Corden said: “In the heat of the moment I made a sarcastic and rude comment about cooking it myself. That’s a comment which I deeply regret. I understand the difficulties of being a server. I have worked shifts in restaurants for years.”

“I have such respect and appreciation for anyone who does such a job,” he added. “And the team at this restaurant is so great. That’s why I like it there.”

Corden did not say what Carey’s specific food allergy is, and a rep for Corden did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Corden admitted on The late show that he thought the matter was over after staff brought champagne “as an apology”.

“I walked around thinking I did nothing wrong, did I? But the truth is, I made a rude comment, and it was wrong. It was a pointless comment. It was rude to the server,” he said. said.

After owner McNally released information about Corden’s behavior, subsequently banning him from the restaurant, Corden said he “immediately” got his phone number to discuss the events.

“We had a good chat. He enjoyed the call. I was glad we got to clear the air, and I felt like we treated him privately, you know?” said Cordon. “But at this point the story was out there, and people were upset.”

On Oct. 17, McNally wrote on Instagram that Corden was “the most abusive customer to my Balthazar servers since the restaurant opened 25 years ago.”

In his post, he detailed Corden’s behavior after his wife’s dish was returned. “A few minutes after receiving the food, James called their server, MK, and told him there was a bit of egg white mixed in with the egg yolk,” McNally wrote on Instagram. “MK informed the floor manager, G. The kitchen remade the dish but unfortunately sent it with home fries instead of salad.”

He added, “Because of this, I’m going to lift Corden’s ban” and joked that he would “give one to me instead. I’m going to ban myself from Balthazar for 2 weeks.”
