Latest Parkland verdict: Juror ‘threatened’ during Nikolas Cruz sentencing

Parkland shootings: Nikolas Cruz listens to the verdict read in court

A juror in Nikolas Cruz’s trial reportedly informed a member of court staff that she had been threatened by another panel member during a deliberation over the fate of the Parkland shooter.

Prosecutors have sounded the alarm over the perceived threat in a filing asking Judge Elizabeth Scherer to launch an investigation hours after the jury recommended a life sentence for Cruz on Thursday.

“Juror X spoke to a support staff member and informed the support staff member that during deliberations she had received what she perceived as a threat from a fellow juror while ‘She was in the jury room,’ the filing, obtained by CNN.

The development comes as other members of the jury expressed their frustration at not being able to convince a single “resister” that Cruz deserved the death penalty.

Foreman Benjamin Thomas said CBSMiami that a juror had been adamant from the start of deliberations that Cruz should not receive the death penalty because he was mentally ill.

The juror has since claims denied in a court filing that she had made her decision on sentencing before hearing evidence.

“Rather than helping us heal, it just keeps reopening our wounds.”

She then expressed hope that the families could “move towards healing” in a statement released by Death Penalty Action.

“We can never get our loved ones back, but without a death sentence hanging over us, we can remember our loved ones for who they were before the horrific outbreak of gun violence touched their lives.”

Prosecutors call for investigation into juror’s ‘threat’

Prosecutors who sought the death penalty for Nikolas Cruz alleged that one of the jurors felt threatened by another panel member during deliberation.

The state filed a motion shortly after Thursday’s verdict asking Judge Elizabeth Scherer to compel authorities to question the juror, who has not been named.

“Juror X spoke to a support staff member and informed the support staff member that during deliberations she had received what she perceived as a threat from a fellow juror while ‘She was in the jury room,’ the filing, obtained by CNN.

The record does not indicate how the juror voted in recommending the final sentence or any additional circumstances surrounding the perceived threat.

The deliberation process came under scrutiny almost immediately after the verdict was announced, with the father of one of the Parkland shooting victims, Ryan Petty, saying it was a single vote.

Jury foreman Benjamin Thomas later said CBSMiami that there was a “recalcitrant” juror against the death penalty from the start of the deliberations. Two other people then joined that juror to vote for a life sentence without parole, Mr Thomas said.
