Kamala Harris: Secret Service says VP’s motorcade first reported mechanical failure when vehicle actually hit curb

Vice President Kamala Harris was involved in a minor car accident earlier this week, the Secret Service said Thursday, and the agency now says her vehicle hit a curb after initially reporting a mechanical failure.

“During a protective move on Monday, a vehicle in a motorcade had a minor override and struck a sidewalk,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement Thursday. “The beneficiary was transferred to a secondary vehicle and the procession continued to its destination. No one was injured.”

Guglielmi also said, “Initial radio traffic indicated it was a mechanical failure and this was communicated to agency management by personnel supporting the motorcade movement. After the protective move was completed, management was verbally informed of additional relevant facts indicating that the vehicle had struck a curb.

The incident happened on Harris’ usual route to work. Her spokeswoman, Kirsten Allen, said the vice president had “tremendous gratitude” for her Secret Service detail.

“The Vice President was uninjured and appreciates the quick response from her USSS detail to get her to the White House safely,” Allen said.

The Washington Post first pointed out the discrepancy in the description of the incident and that it involved new Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle, who took office last month.

The car crash is the latest incident to thrust the agency – whose mandate includes protecting US government officials – into the spotlight this year and raises new questions about its transparency both internally and publicly.

In April, Four Secret Service employees have been furloughed after being accused in a federal investigation of being duped by two men claiming to be Department of Homeland Security agents.

A month later, two Secret Service employees were sent home from South Korea following an altercation with a taxi driver and two Korean nationals just as Biden embarked on his first Asia tour since taking office.

And in JulyA member of the US Secret Service Counter-Assault Team was arrested by Israeli National Police in Jerusalem after he allegedly assaulted a woman outside a bar.

Agent Actions and retention of agency data too been reviewed by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, uprising at the United States Capitol.

During the last decadethe Secret Service has come under scrutiny for troubling security flaws and repeated misconduct within its ranks.

Before taller fences were put up around the White House during the Trump administration, officers Many times had to answer at people which had jumped up on the White House lawn.

Under the Obama administration, party breakers at a state dinner demanded a investigation who found that officers failed to follow protocol at a security checkpoint. And 11 Secret Service members were involved in an investigation whether several agents brought prostitutes back to their hotels in Colombia before a presidential visit.

The Washington Post in 2014 also reported a series of security breaches after a man fired a semi-automatic rifle from outside the White House at its facade, including that the Secret Service failed to conduct a proper investigation a few days after the incident.
